Excerpt

Since, at the beginning of this tale, I did not recollect myself nor retain even the slightest glimmer of such understanding as would have led me to an awareness of the significance of the various occurrences that transpired at the Lake of Horns then, I am adding this preface, though it was no part of my initial conception, that the meaningfulness of the events described by “Khys’ Estri” (as I have come to think of the shadow-self I was while the dharen held my skills and memory in abeyance) not be withheld from you as they were from me.

I knew myself not: I was Estri because the girl Carth supposedly found wandering in the forest stripped of comprehension and identity chose that name.

There, perhaps, lies the greatest irony of all, that I named myself anew after Estri Hadrath diet Estrazi, who in reality I had once been.

And perhaps it is not irony at all, but an expression of Khys’ humor, an implicit dissertation by him who structured my experiences, my very thoughts, for nearly two years, until his audacity drove him to bring together once more Sereth crill Tyris, past-Slayer, then the outlawed Ebvrasea, then arrar to the dharen himself; Chayin rendi Inekte, cahndor of Nemar, co-cahndor of the Taken Lands, chosen so of Tar-Kesa, and at that time Khys’ puppet-vassal; and myself, former Well-Keepress, tiask of Nemar, and lastly becoming the chaldless outlaw who had come to judgment and endured ongoing retribution at the dharen’s hands.

To test his hesting, his power over owkahen, the time-coming-to-be, did Khys put us together, all three, in his Day-Keeper’s city — and from that moment onward, the Weathers of Life became fixed: siphoned into a singular future; sealed tight as a dead god in his mausoleum, whose every move brought him closer to the sum total, obliteration. So did the dharen Khys bespeak it, himself …

I. In Mourning for the Unrecollected

The hulion hovered, wings aflap, at the window, butting its black wedge of a head against the pane. Its yellow eyes glowed cruelly, slit-pupiled. Its white fangs, gleaming, were each as long as my forearm.

I screamed. Its tufted ears, flat against its head, twitched. Again and again, toothed mouth open wide, it battered at the window, roaring. Once more I screamed and ran stumbling to the far wall of my prison.

I pounded upon the locked doors with my fists, pressing myself against the wood. Sobbing, I turned to face it. The beast’s ears flickered at the sound. Those jaws, which could have snapped me in half, closed. It cocked its head.

I trembled, caught in its gaze. I could retreat no farther. I sank to my knees, moaning, against the door frame.

The beast gave one final snort. Those wings, with a spread thrice the length of a tall man, flapped decisively, and it was gone.

When the hulion was no more than a speck in the greening sky, I rose clumsily, shaking, to collect the papers I had strewn across the mat in my terror.

They were the arrar Carth’s papers, those he had forgotten in his haste to answer his returning master’s summons.

I knelt upon my hands and knees on the silvery pile, that I might gather the pages and replace them in the tas-sueded folder before Carth returned.

Foolish, I thought to myself, that I had so feared the hulion. It could not have gotten in.

I could not get out: It could not get in. Once I had thrown a chair at that impervious clarity. The chair had splintered. With one stout thala leg, as thick as my arm, had I battered upon that window.

All I had accomplished was the transformation of chair into kindling. The hulion, I chided myself, could have fared no better.

Hulions, upon occasion, have been known to eat man-flesh. Hulions, furred and winged, fanged and clawed, are the servants of the dharen who rules Silistra.

I had had no need to fear. Yet, I thought as I gathered the arrar Carth’s scattered papers, hulions are fearsome.

Perhaps if I had been able, as others are, to hear its mind’s intent, I would have felt differently. My fingers, numb and trembling, fumbled for the delicate sheets.

One in particular caught my eye. It was in Carth’s precise hand and headed: “Pre-assessment Monitoring of the Arrar Sereth. Enar Fourth Second, 25,697.”

I had met, once, the arrar Sereth. Upon my birthday, Macara fourth seventh, in the year ’696 had I met him, that night my child had been conceived.

I had read of his exploits. He frightened me, killer of killers, enforcer for the dharen, he who wore the arrar: chald of the messenger. Sereth, scarred and lean and taut like some carnivore, who had loved the Keepress Estri, my namesake, and with her brought great change to Silistra in the pass Amarsa, 25,695 — yes, I had met him.

About the Author

Best selling author Janet Morris began writing in 1976 and has since published more than 30 novels, many co-authored with her husband Chris Morris or others.

She has contributed short fiction to the shared universe fantasy series Thieves World, in which she created the Sacred Band of Stepsons, a mythical unit of ancient fighters modeled on the Sacred Band of Thebes.

She created, orchestrated, and edited the Bangsian fantasy series Heroes in Hell, writing stories for the series as well as co-writing the related novel, The Little Helliad, with Chris Morris.

She wrote the bestselling Silistra Quartet in the 1970s, including High Couch of Silistra, The Golden Sword, Wind from the Abyss, and The Carnelian Throne.

This quartet had more than four million copies in Bantam print alone, and was translated into German, French, Italian, Russian and other languages. In the 1980s, Baen Books released a second edition of this landmark series.

The third edition is the Author’s Cut edition, newly revised by the author for Perseid Press. Most of her fiction work has been in the fantasy and science fiction genres, although she has also written historical and other novels.

Morris has written, contributed to, or edited several book-length works of non-fiction, as well as papers and articles on nonlethal weapons, developmental military technology and other defense and national security topics.

Janet says: ‘People often ask what book to read first. I recommend “I, the Sun” if you like ancient history; “The Sacred Band,” a novel, if you like heroic fantasy; “Lawyers in Hell” if you like historical fantasy set in hell; “Outpassage” if you like hard science fiction; “High Couch of Silistra” if you like far-future dystopian or philosophical novels.

I am most enthusiastic about the definitive Perseid Press Author’s Cut editions, which I revised and expanded.’

About The Author

Award-winning author of over a million published words, I’m currently working on a supersized series called The Kristy Nicolle Fantasy Infiniverse.

This enormous project captures an ever-growing magical universe that will span up to and beyond seventy published works where characters from across multiple storylines and dimensions can collide in the most magical and unexpected ways possible.

Why is the Infiniverse exciting for you as a reader?

When I was a kid, I loved stories. I still do, with some of my favourites being Harry Potter (Of Course), The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, and Divergent. One of the things all these series have in common is that they construct entire worlds for the reader.

So, now it’s my turn to give my readers what i always craved.

What did I want, you ask?
I always wanted more.
More backstories, more insight, more details that made the world real. I wanted the story to go on forever, but with how publishing has worked for so long, there was always a limit to how much an author could do.

That limit is gone now, what with self-publishing putting the control completely in my hands, and it is my intention to create an ever-expanding fantasy universe where the reader gets a say in what stories are told, and which moments are further explored and elaborated.

Imagine if you could tell J.K Rowling which character’s backstory you wanted most, and then a few months later she actually gave it to you. Imagine if you could decide how much or how little of a fantasy world you explored, along with the author?

Well, that’s what I’m offering. In this new age of self-publishing, my options are pretty much infinite, which means that so are yours.

Ready to dive into my fantasy infiniverse that could span as much as one hundred stories?

Let’s see how rich, how large it can grow, and just how much readers can contribute to shaping my fantasy Infiniverse into somewhere they never want to leave.

After all, It was built with no-one but you, the reader for whom one story, one series, or one point of view is never enough, in mind.

The Fate Of Our Union Virtual Book Tour

GENRE:  Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A mountainous thundering bull breaks up battling tribesmen, summoning three struggling youths, as an insidious unseen enemy turns tribes against tribes—pitting rich against poor, sons against fathers, and men against gods. Its insatiable hunger for division threatens to plunge mankind into a dystopian realm ruled by man-eating wolves.
A miraculous seven-headed horse, a symbol of unity, assembles the struggling youths of extraordinary origin into a journey of self-discovery.
There Sunu the Saxon Poet, Rufus the Roman Stoic, and Keresaspa the Sarmatian Priestess must overcome pride, aversion, and unforgiveness; there they must learn from historical heroes, philosophers, and amazingly similar gods to battle the unseen monster and its rising wolfmen.
Fated to part ways to face the demons at home, Sunu, Rufus, and Keresaspa must reunite as they bring divided peoples together to fight the source tearing everyone apart.
They must heed the divine wisdom of the seven-headed horse and justly wield the seven magic weapons they’ve mysteriously been given to overcome the unseen enemy and understand the higher purpose of the mountainous thundering bull.
Excerpt
Sunu the Saxon and Rufus the Roman compare their gods (CH 6 of The Fate of Our Union).
“Jupiter is right reason, chief regulator,” Rufus praised he who permeates the air as moisture, knowing he sounded more interesting the way he appeared in poems. “Through the clouds, the Thunderer rides his horse-drawn chariot, followed by power, strength, and victory. With his bolts, he famously slew godless giants and the water serpent Typhoeus.”
“He’s like Thunor!” Sunu lit up with intrigue. “Except Thunor slew giants and a giant water serpent, Jörmungand, with a hammer, and his chariot is drawn by goats.”
“The goat is also sacred to Jupiter, along with the oak, rock, and bull.” Rufus glanced from oak to rock for Amalthaea but only saw Tanngnjóstr. “Still, many think Thunor is more like Hercules, as they are both chariot-riding, cudgel-swinging warriors with a lengthy list of deeds.”
Sunu’s ears perked. “And they are?”
“Hercules slew the Hydra, an enormous water serpent, like Jörmungand, and took oxen from a giant, Cacus in the cave, like Hymir in the mountain; both Hercules and Thunor fought and slew them with club and hammer.”
Sunu imagined the deeds side by side. “Are you telling me the truth?”
“In truth, the parallels are quite striking.” Rufus chuckled as he pretended to swing a cudgel. “For they also have a heavenly father and an earthly mother, who produced a quick-tempered, far-traveling son who can out-eat and out-drink anyone in the cosmos!”
Sunu hoisted a golden brow. “Interesting.”
“Unfortunately,” Rufus’s tone was no laughing matter, “they were also fated to die by the serpents’ poison.”
Tune In Tomorrow Book Tour
Their fantasy is her reality.
Tune in Tomorrow
by Randee Dawn
Genre: Humorous Pop-Culture Fantasy
A funny, thrilling and mysterious adventure into the world of alternate reality television… Perfect for fans of Jasper Fforde and Christopher Moore.
She’s just a small town girl, with big mythic dreams.
Starr Weatherby came to New York to become… well, a star. But after ten years and no luck, she’s offered a big role – on a show no one has ever heard of. And there’s a reason for that. It’s a ‘reality’ show beyond the Veil, human drama, performed for the entertainment of the Fae.
But as Starr shifts from astounded newcomer to rising fan favorite, she learns about the show’s dark underbelly – and mysterious disappearance of her predecessor. She’ll do whatever it takes to keep her dream job – though she might just bring down the show in the process.
Raves for the book:
“I thought I’d seen everything in the galaxy of reality TV, until Randee’s book!” – Andy Cohen, Host / Executive Producer, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and New York Times bestselling author
“Randee Dawn has single-handedly created a glittering new genre: the Backstage Comedy Fantasy Romance — and I want more!” – Ellen Kushner, World Fantasy Award-winning author of Thomas the Rhymer and Swordspoint
“Randee Dawn’s Tune in Tomorrow is a wild ride through the world of reality TV, Faerie style. It’s a satire and a romance (of a sort) and a fairytale and a mystery, full of characters I loved (and loved to hate) and situations that had me biting my nails. It’s also hilariously funny.” – World Fantasy Award nominee Delia Sherman, author of The Porcelain Dove and The Evil Wizard Smallbone
“Tune in Tomorrow is a joyride. It takes you on a journey into the make believe world of a soap opera. It dives in and out of what could possibly be fantasy or in fact is reality. As with the sands of time, as you Search for Tomorrow, or you are feeling Young and Restless, get lost in the adventures of Starr and be taken over by all that is Tune in Tomorrow.” – Emmy-nominated actor Gregory Zarian
“Dawn’s Tune in Tomorrow is a ton of fun with a lot of heart, charming characters, and devilish foes. And it’s funny as hell.” – Zin E. Rocklyn, author of Flowers for the Sea
“Few authors can open the door to another world as easily as you might turn on the TV, but Randee Dawn has the key and the remote control firmly in her hand. Flip through the fae and the grindylows, let her be your TV guide and psychopomp. You will find yourself howling at the gate for a rerun.” – Meg Elison, author of Number One Fan
“This book is a BOUNCY CASTLE! This book is like a candy store and a screwball comedy had a fling in fairyland and the result was a mythic soap opera! There was no predicting it, there was only riding this dragon all the way to its rollicking rollercoaster conclusion. How dear and joyous it is, how satisfying, and how worthy of praise!” – World Fantasy Award-winning author of Saint Death’s Daughter C.S.E. Cooney
“Dawn balances over-the-top drama and comedy with genuine intrigue to create a fun story with plenty of heart. Fans of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett will want to snatch this up.” – Publishers Weekly
“Tune in Tomorrow is a hilariously well-constructed story with surprising complexity, and one that uses its reality TV premise not as a destination, but as a jumping off point to create something uniquely interesting that stays entertaining the entire way through.” – Lightspeed Magazine
“Dawn’s witty take on society’s fascination with peering at life through a camera lens spotlights the sometimes-blurred intersection between fantasy and reality, all captured on video. Her playful narrative propels readers into the realm of alternate possibilities while questioning what is real and what is make-believe, and if we can even tell the difference.” – BookTrib
Excerpt
Tune in Tomorrow, by Randee Dawn
They twisted and turned so much Starr lost track of where she was, and Jason’s strange mixture of delight and nervousness was starting to make her feel anxious. At last, she came to a hard halt in the middle of a hallway.
Jason tilted his head.
“Look, I get it. You’re like a big VFX warehouse or something. I’m guessing Tune in Tomorrow is some kind of space opera on the web. But your showing me every nook and cranny and door hinge doesn’t give me a clue about what’s going on. What is this place?”
Jason took a dramatic pause and his green eyes lit up, “Tune in Tomorrow is many things to so many mythics. We are the longest-running, most-viewed reality TV show ever made in any dimension. We are made by mythics, for mythics—but starring humans. “
Reality?” Starr twitched. “With dragon puppets and robots?”
Jason started to speak, took a breath and paced up and down. Raised a finger, lowered it, then stopped in front of her. Cleared his throat. “It’s been some time since I had to explain this to a human. Bear with me.” He pushed open another door and gestured inside.
Starr planted her feet in the doorway. “Jason, this is a toilet.”
“Yes, well, needs must. I don’t have any other handy water.”
He was speaking in riddles—and disappearing into a bathroom with a near-stranger was awkward at best, creepy at worst. Still, she didn’t sense Jason was up to no good.
He practically vibrated with excitement, or nerves, or both. Swallowing, Starr took the risk and stepped inside. The bathroom door swung closed behind them.
Jason turned on all four sinks in the room. Water cascaded from three; butterflies burst from the fourth. Starr gaped. Jason quickly shut that one off with a sheepish grin and turned his back on the sink. The butterflies disintegrated.
Starr blinked.
“You see,” he raised his sing-song voice over the noise of the remaining water, “we adore human to’ings and fro’ings. We are the original fans of stories-without-end. Some hundreds of years ago when the Seelie came up with the idea of telling stories to mythics, they were known as Stories Of All Purpose, or for short –”
“SOAP,” Starr realized. The room was starting to heat up and the mirrors fogged; Jason had apparently turned on only the hot water. She wondered where he was going with all this; the fantastical elements of his story were fanciful and charming, but silly. Maybe he was just being very method about the show. “You’re making a soap opera?”
“Shh!” he quieted her, glancing around. “Yes—and no. That’s how we started. But most mythics are self-cleaning. Bathing is a hobby, not a practice. SOAPs fell a bit out of fashion. Mythics wanted real human stories.
Finally, once humans on your side of the Veil began writing their own TV shows, one of us—me, in fact—infiltrated a few writing rooms and discovered that you were doing what we’d been doing for years and calling it ‘reality TV.’ That fit us perfectly . Our viewers tune in because they believe we are telling real stories, and that’s what keeps us going.”
When did the writing bug ensnare you?
Ever since I was a kid in elementary school, I loved writing stories for assignments. I remember one time having a Halloween story to write in third grade.
They had us make a book cover and add two sheets of paper to it. I ended up adding like ten and had the longest story out of the class. If I remember correctly, it was a vampire story.
Is writing your full-time profession?
Right now, I’m a full-time mom and author. When the kids are at school, I work on my books and then spend the rest of the day with the kids when they get home.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since I was 18. In 2018, I finally started to publish my short stories. Later, I compiled them into a collection titled Tales of Ferrês. It took me over a year to release all the short stories.
Now in October of this year I will release my first novel from my Half-Blood Academy Series.
How many published books have you written?
At this time, I have released a collection of short stories titled Tales of Ferrês and plan to release my second book in October 2021 titled, The Seeker’s Core.
Which genres do you write?
I’m a young adult speculative fiction author. I currently have short stories in the realm of Fantasy. My upcoming book is Sci-Fi Fantasy.
I also have a work in progress that will come out next year, that is Urban Fantasy. So, I mostly write Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Sci-Fi, or Horror.
What do you find most challenging about writing for these genres?
The hardest thing about writing in these genres is the world building. It takes so long to construct a world. I find I want to get writing before I’m ready to take that step.
Usually, I will work out a chapter guideline to follow so that way I don’t get lost.
What are you working on now?
I have two projects I’m currently working on. The first has been going on for over a year and I soon will get it wrapped up.
Gargoyle Sighted is the book, and I’ve been releasing each chapter to my subscribers for a while now. I should have this wrapped and ready to release this coming summer of 2022.
The second project is a novella titled The SwordMaster Brothers. These two brothers will take a test before the GrandMaster to see if they are worthy to be called SwordMasters.
They each must fight alone and face their biggest fear. But they must live in order to earn the title.
Where do you find inspiration for your characters?
I find inspiration from people I meet, to movies I watch, to books I read.
It is hard to say when inspiration comes, but it is fun to find out what little thing will jog a scene into creation or who will inspire a character I create.
What has been your most rewarding experience since publishing your work?
I would say the most rewarding experience is receiving emails from my readers.
It puts into perspective how well you do with a book when a reader reaches out and says they love it.
What advice would you give to authors just starting out?
Help your fellow authors out because they will help you in return.
This will not only help you grow in the author industry, but will help you grow your reader base.
Is there anything else you’d like your readers to know about you?
I’m a nerd at heart. I love collecting fairies, dragons, and swords. I also love playing Dice Masters and Magic the Gathering with my fiancé and friends.
I always have a book at the ready to read, sometimes even two or three. I have a long to read list and thanks to Kindle Unlimited; I get everything I need.
Did I mention I usually read around 70-100 books a year?
What message are you sharing in your books?
One of the powerful elements I put in my stories is the family bond between individuals.
Like in The Seeker’s Core, I focus on the pull a child has towards her mother and the bond brought together by a stepfather.
What are your favorite books?
I am a big fan of The Harry Potter Series, The Inheritance Series, and the Dragon Lance books. I grew up reading these series and still enjoy them to this day.
If you could create an author’s group with writers from any time period, who would you invite?
I’m not big on classics much. If I could pick several authors, they are Stephanie Ayers, Allison D. Reid, Hope Hart, Lee Savino, Renee Rose, Lili Zander, and Miranda Bridges.
I mainly picked these authors because I know them and would love to meet them in person or I enjoyed their books so much I devour everything they publish.
Who has influenced your writing the most?
I would say, hands down, it is my editor and long-time friend Allison Reker. She also writes under: Allison D. Reid. She inspires me to do better and learn new things about my craft.
When you’re not writing, where can we find you?
I would love to say in the mountains hiking and breathing fresh air.
But most likely you will find me curled up on my couch reading books or watching TV with my kids.
A movie producer wants to turn your book into a movie, and you get to make a cameo. What would you do in the movie?
I would love to do a battle scene. They are my favorite scenes to write and would love to get my hands on a sword or battle-axe. It would feel like I’m in Lord of the Rings or something on the order of that.
An elf named 12-25 approaches you. He’s sneezing, wheezing, coughing and there’s a strange tattoo of a snoring dog on his cheek. What do you do?
One I would hope I’m wearing a mask and have hand sanitizer on hand.
But then I would go over and help the elf get somewhere to rest so he could catch his breath.
Once he calmed down and got everything under control, I would then probably ask about the tattoo. Because who wouldn’t?
Then I would probably sit there for hours just chatting until we both parted ways.
What are your most effective marketing strategies?
I try new stuff all the time. Right now, I share in groups on Facebook, then post on my Instagram and Pinterest.
I also do some paid advertising newsletter services. Those get you in front of a broader range of readers.
Then the FREE options are to do newsletter swaps with authors in your target audience, Bookbub swaps, Bookstagram swaps, and blog tours.
It is a never-ending list of things you can do for a new release. The hard part is finding those readers that will take a chance on a new author.
But the marketing strategies always change with the industry, and it keeps you on your toes.
Do you have a website/Facebook page, etc?
Currently, my website is under construction.
I am in the works of creating a Pen Name for myself that targets adult readers with erotic contemporary, Sci-Fi, PNR, and Fantasy.
The plan is to bring both my names under one branding.
My current Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/dualminds2021.
Where can we find your books?
Tales of Ferrês can be found at your favorite retailer online in ebook and print.
https://books2read.com/tofbundlebook1
The Seeker’s Core can be found on Amazon Kindle Unlimited. It will drop on October 15, 2021.
Make sure to grab it to have it show up in your reader on release day.
