Excerpt from Bonds of Friendship:

Without a word, the fairy motioned for her to follow. Karigan waited a moment as the fairy flew to the opening of the cave. Great, I suppose I have to go in there now! Irritation was growing with every step as the entrance loomed a few feet ahead of her. But the sound of the rushing water began to calm her. Maybe it won’t be so bad. Perhaps something interesting is inside, like that time Father and I found that little den in the Wood.

She waited for Alia to tell her to go in. To her surprise, the little fairy twisted and swooped inside. The little ball of blue light helped ease her fears and allowed her to see that the cave wasn’t too deep.

Karigan walked forward. examining every little detail and wondering what kind of creature called this cavern its home. Towards the back she saw shimmering lights reflecting on the stone wall as Alia hovered near the edge. Hmmm… I wonder what that could be.

As she approached the spot, the smell of moss filled her nose as a little trickle of water splashed the stone floor. The little trickle opened into a basin which created a pool of water, almost like a water dish. Two feet from the little pool was a large broken stone. The peculiar stone piqued her curiosity, so she adventured over to investigate it.

“Alia, can you come closer so I can see?”

The fairy swooped down, landing on a nearby rock.

“Here, how’s this?” Placing her hands together a bright light formed. Karigan watched it float across the distance then stop above the item she wished to see.

“Wow, why didn’t you use that earlier?” As expected, the fairy shrugged her tiny shoulders. “You didn’t ask.”

A snort escaped her, startling the little fairy. Serves you right, you little menace. She kneeled down, looking inside the funny rock. It must have been round to begin with. After inspecting it, she concluded that it must have broken from the inside the way the pieces were scattered across the cave floor. “What kind of creature lives in a rock?” Shards of light reflected off the sides, looking like glass from the inside.

Alia snickered. Karigan was about to ask her what she was snickering about when rocks slid by the entrance. “What was that?” They both looked towards the bright opening as a small growl filled the cave. “Helblazes!”

What inspired you to write “Bonds of Friendship”?

I was trying to figure out what direction I wanted to go with my book series I was working on. The first books I released turned out to be ones I am still working on because they are epic fantasy novel length.

But I decided I needed to do more world building and broke things down into individual stories to tell the stories for the land of Ferrês. “Bonds of Friendship” is about Karigan and Silvashi.

It tells the story of how Karigan found Silvashi and they became friends when they were from two different worlds. Dragons were considered being deadly beasts that killed without thinking.

Turns out Karigan proved that myth wrong. Silvashi and her journey together back to her father’s place only to find they can’t be separated so easily.

The inspiration behind this story is how friendship bloomed between two different species. They are curious about each other and want to know one another. This leads them to become good friends and wondering about the world now that they are friends. I plan to work with this story towards creating another series off of it. But those won’t come for a few years yet.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Right now, I am working on my novellas within my Tales of Tarza Series. This series is like Tales of Ferrês, but instead of short stories they are novella length. I am currently on book 3 in the series and that is titled “The Emerald Knight.”

Each book features a story within the kingdom of Tarza with original characters. And the time is different as well. “The Sunflower Meadow” is during the time of King Tyler and his children’s reign across the land.

This is the story when Prince Joseph finds his true love and fights to keep her for himself. “Masquerade Assassin” is the second book in the series and is the first book I featured Kerowyné Flares in.

She is my leading lady, but this adventure is when she is younger and still finding her place among royalty. Love this story and think it is a fun read to experience. “The Emerald Knight,” is the third installment.

And it is the story of Princess Rachel and how she finds her dragon Kurza. It is a broken romance adventure story that leads a strong female heroine to choose her destiny over love.

I’m still writing this one so you will have to either subscribe to my blog for fun details HERE or sign-up for my newsletter HERE to get notifications on its progress.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in “Bonds of Friendship”?

Karigan is a farmer’s daughter that is brought into the folds of the Forest of Ferrês. This is where she finds Silvashi, a baby silver dragon. He ends up befriending her and changing her life forever.

Silvashi is a baby silver dragon that finds himself isolated within the Forest of Ferrês. He wants a friend or someone to keep him company. The only thing he didn’t realize was that one goddess would answer his plea and give him a friend.

What Inspired the Tales of Ferrês?

Since I have been in high school I have had a story idea in my head that created upon itself more and more throughout the years. This was my world of Tarzinëa.

I have the novels planned out in my head. The problem is how complex the story is itself and how long the books will probably be. This led me to find small ways to world build for the overall story. One of the main ways was creating “The Tales of Ferrês Series.”

It allowed me to get into the head of some of my characters and dive into their backstory to create a short story series all its own. Tales of Ferrês was created of ten short stories that helped break down the unique elements within this kingdom.

Many haven’t stepped foot in the kingdom for 500 years and lived to tell the tale. But some have entered but never spoke of their adventures within.

This series comprises standalone stories that stand in different time periods of Tarzinëa. And each story has its own character that is influenced by the creatures within.

I love each story individually in its own way, and each influences the overall story line throughout my journey as a writer. You are free to read them in order or pick each to read in any order they want.

If you want to get all the stories in one book you can grab “Tales of Ferrês,” bundle book. All the stories are included plus a bonus story never seen outside the bundle book. You can grab the bundle book HERE at your favorite retailer or through my author store HERE.

Excerpt

I went to my room to wash up for supper and glared at myself in the mirror. She could have been more friendly. I would be lucky if Rob shows up tomorrow as planned. But whatever if he is a baby and chickens out, I guess it is up to me.

With that, I changed my top and headed down for supper. My eagerness for tomorrow was growing by the second, and I was super excited. Who cares about the noise? It was probably only a squirrel or something?

My thoughts drifted through my plans for tomorrow as the night carried on, and soon bedtime came. I slept like a baby even though something deep inside said something horrible was going to happen tomorrow. So many horrible things had already happened in my life, why not one more?

What inspired you to write this book?

The inspiration behind this story was our love for camp fire type horror books like Goosebumps growing up. Ben and I wanted to focus on a fantasy creature story for an anthology we were joining. The main topic was to have some type of mythical creatures.

We couldn’t shake the fact that we wanted to write something with horror in it. The idea was to create a forbidden area in a small town that held a deadly secret that the towns folks tried to not think about. But Gracie’s Aunt was the exception. The horror of the forest was always on her mind since she lives on the borderline. Just in the backyard, she can step from safety into a deadly zone that could be the end of her.

The problem comes to fruition when Aunt Margaret takes in Gracie. She is in her teens and likes to get a sense of adventure throughout her day. Gracie has trauma of her own with her mom dying so she is trying to get her mind on other things.

Kids are always wanting to go into the woods and see what magic it can hold. I was one of those kids when I was young. My dad would take me to the forest to walk around and see what animals we could find. We would do this for hours. This feeling of wonder and adventure was one of my reasons for choosing this background for the story.

I also had an enormous love for faeries growing up. My goal was to twist the stories of faeries that were evil or sprites that would live in the forest to taunt children. Also, I have pulled some inspiration from movies I have seen in the past. One, for example, was: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. That was one of the horror movies that scared me with faeries.

A lot of elements inspired the story, but it all came together when Ben and I put our heads together. You should give it a read to see the ins and out of our writing on this project.

About the Authors

Ben and Katie tied the knot in September 2024 but not before putting pen to paper. Together they crafted their first horror story together titled: “Darkest Delights,” back in 2022.

They loved stories like Goosebumps growing up and decided to create their own campfire story that would leave a little fright for the younger readers to enjoy.

They plan to work on more in the future. Make sure to subscribe to K.M. Jenkins’ newsletter to get updates on books when they hit the stores: https://www.subscribepage.com/author_km_jenkins

By way of introduction, here is Katie’s Bio:

K.M. Jenkins is a published international bestselling author that writes epic battles, forbidden romance, and tales of fantasy and adventure.

Hello, Katie, welcome to Angel Kiss Publications. Thank you for agreeing to do this interview.

Thank you for having me.

When did the writing bug ensnare you?

Ever since I was a kid in elementary school, I loved writing stories for assignments. I remember one time having a Halloween story to write in third grade.

They had us make a book cover and add two sheets of paper to it. I ended up adding like ten and had the longest story out of the class. If I remember correctly, it was a vampire story.

Is writing your full-time profession?

Right now, I’m a full-time mom and author. When the kids are at school, I work on my books and then spend the rest of the day with the kids when they get home.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since I was 18. In 2018, I finally started to publish my short stories. Later, I compiled them into a collection titled Tales of Ferrês. It took me over a year to release all the short stories.

Now in October of this year I will release my first novel from my Half-Blood Academy Series.

How many published books have you written?

At this time, I have released a collection of short stories titled Tales of Ferrês and plan to release my second book in October 2021 titled, The Seeker’s Core.

Which genres do you write?

I’m a young adult speculative fiction author. I currently have short stories in the realm of Fantasy. My upcoming book is Sci-Fi Fantasy.

I also have a work in progress that will come out next year, that is Urban Fantasy. So, I mostly write Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Sci-Fi, or Horror.

What do you find most challenging about writing for these genres?

The hardest thing about writing in these genres is the world building. It takes so long to construct a world. I find I want to get writing before I’m ready to take that step.

Usually, I will work out a chapter guideline to follow so that way I don’t get lost.

What are you working on now?

I have two projects I’m currently working on. The first has been going on for over a year and I soon will get it wrapped up.

Gargoyle Sighted is the book, and I’ve been releasing each chapter to my subscribers for a while now. I should have this wrapped and ready to release this coming summer of 2022.

The second project is a novella titled The SwordMaster Brothers. These two brothers will take a test before the GrandMaster to see if they are worthy to be called SwordMasters.

They each must fight alone and face their biggest fear. But they must live in order to earn the title.

Where do you find inspiration for your characters?

I find inspiration from people I meet, to movies I watch, to books I read.

It is hard to say when inspiration comes, but it is fun to find out what little thing will jog a scene into creation or who will inspire a character I create.

What has been your most rewarding experience since publishing your work?

I would say the most rewarding experience is receiving emails from my readers.

It puts into perspective how well you do with a book when a reader reaches out and says they love it.

What advice would you give to authors just starting out?

Help your fellow authors out because they will help you in return.

This will not only help you grow in the author industry, but will help you grow your reader base.

Is there anything else you’d like your readers to know about you?

I’m a nerd at heart. I love collecting fairies, dragons, and swords. I also love playing Dice Masters and Magic the Gathering with my fiancé and friends.

I always have a book at the ready to read, sometimes even two or three. I have a long to read list and thanks to Kindle Unlimited; I get everything I need.

Did I mention I usually read around 70-100 books a year?

What message are you sharing in your books?

One of the powerful elements I put in my stories is the family bond between individuals.

Like in The Seeker’s Core, I focus on the pull a child has towards her mother and the bond brought together by a stepfather.

What are your favorite books?

I am a big fan of The Harry Potter Series, The Inheritance Series, and the Dragon Lance books. I grew up reading these series and still enjoy them to this day.

Created on Canva.com

If you could create an author’s group with writers from any time period, who would you invite?

I’m not big on classics much. If I could pick several authors, they are Stephanie Ayers, Allison D. Reid, Hope Hart, Lee Savino, Renee Rose, Lili Zander, and Miranda Bridges.

I mainly picked these authors because I know them and would love to meet them in person or I enjoyed their books so much I devour everything they publish.

Who has influenced your writing the most?

I would say, hands down, it is my editor and long-time friend Allison Reker. She also writes under: Allison D. Reid. She inspires me to do better and learn new things about my craft.

When you’re not writing, where can we find you?

I would love to say in the mountains hiking and breathing fresh air.

But most likely you will find me curled up on my couch reading books or watching TV with my kids.

Created on Canva.com

A movie producer wants to turn your book into a movie, and you get to make a cameo. What would you do in the movie?

I would love to do a battle scene. They are my favorite scenes to write and would love to get my hands on a sword or battle-axe. It would feel like I’m in Lord of the Rings or something on the order of that.

An elf named 12-25 approaches you. He’s sneezing, wheezing, coughing and there’s a strange tattoo of a snoring dog on his cheek. What do you do?

One I would hope I’m wearing a mask and have hand sanitizer on hand.

But then I would go over and help the elf get somewhere to rest so he could catch his breath.

Once he calmed down and got everything under control, I would then probably ask about the tattoo. Because who wouldn’t?

Then I would probably sit there for hours just chatting until we both parted ways.

What are your most effective marketing strategies?

I try new stuff all the time. Right now, I share in groups on Facebook, then post on my Instagram and Pinterest.

I also do some paid advertising newsletter services. Those get you in front of a broader range of readers.

Then the FREE options are to do newsletter swaps with authors in your target audience, Bookbub swaps, Bookstagram swaps, and blog tours.

It is a never-ending list of things you can do for a new release. The hard part is finding those readers that will take a chance on a new author.

But the marketing strategies always change with the industry, and it keeps you on your toes.

Do you have a website/Facebook page, etc?

Currently, my website is under construction.

I am in the works of creating a Pen Name for myself that targets adult readers with erotic contemporary, Sci-Fi, PNR, and Fantasy.

The plan is to bring both my names under one branding.

My current Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/dualminds2021.

Where can we find your books?

Tales of Ferrês can be found at your favorite retailer online in ebook and print.

https://books2read.com/tofbundlebook1

The Seeker’s Core can be found on Amazon Kindle Unlimited. It will drop on October 15, 2021.

Make sure to grab it to have it show up in your reader on release day.

Right now, The Seeker’s Core is available in print for those that love a paperback over ereaders.
