The Pyjama Boy Book Blast & Giveaway

GENRE:  Memoir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Steven Murphy spent his formative years in Sydney’s Redfern.
Abandoned by his mother when only weeks old, his father left him in the care of a cruel, alcoholic stepmother while he himself was in jail. Unbelievably, the child they dubbed the “Pyjama Boy” fought his way through life to achieve his ultimate goal.
His story is a poignant and haunting one that captivates its reader from the very beginning and remains long after the book has been closed.
AN INSPIRATIONAL TALE OF SUCCESS AGAINST THE ODDS
Excerpt:
There was something odd about the woman driving the yellow station wagon. Her eyes darted around suspiciously. Steve watched her from his patrol car. Her 1988 Sigma moved off from his right at the green lights, to enter the late-night traffic.
She had a passenger, a young man with a wispy beard. As they moved, the man looked across at the police car waiting third in line at the red light and then glanced momentarily over his shoulder into the back seat. Sparks spat along the dark surface of the road as he tossed his cigarette out the window of the car.
‘Nervy little punk, ’ remarked the older police constable next to Steve.
‘There’s something odd about both of them in that Sigma…,’ said Steve.
‘Yeah, I think we should have a chat with them.’
As lights turned green and when they were clear of the intersection, Steve pulled past the two vehicles in front of them. The Sigma had increased its pace and was nearly out of view as
it turned left almost without slowing. Steve’s pulse rate rose with the revs of the police car. They swung into the side street and passed the Sigma with Red and blue lights flashing, then slowed  in front of it. The older policeman put his arm out his window, indicating that the Sigma should pull up at the curb.
While the woman searched a handbag for her licence, Steve noticed that there was someone lying on the back seat of the car. Shining his torch through the window, Steve realised with a jolt that the passenger was gagged, with a tee shirt twisted and pulled tightly into an open mouth. The arms were pulled back and bound at the wrists with a leather belt.
Within minutes a second patrol car had arrived at the scene and the couple were taken into custody, their bound and gagged passenger found to be dead.
Steve looked at the victim, a man in his mid-thirties and recognised the face of one who had recently ‘helped him in his enquiries.’ Soon there were detectives and forensic officers examining the car and, as the body was being removed, Steve received orders to drive to an address in a nearby suburban street.
About The Author:
I’ve never thought of myself as special-just someone who has lived through life’s challenges like everyone else. But over time, I’ve come to see that by sharing my journey, with all its imperfections, I might offer something meaningful to others.
Life moves so quickly, and the choices we make shape everything. My hope is that by being honest about my experiences, others might find encouragement or even a little clarity for their own paths.
Speaking at Schools and events across Australia has been an unexpected privilege. These moments aren’t about presenting a perfect image; they’re about connecting with people on a real, human level.
I bring photos, videos, and documents to show the truth of my story-not to impress but to connect. When I speak openly, sharing the vulnerabilities and lessons I’ve learned, something powerful happens: the audience feels it, and suddenly, it’s not just my story-its something they can see themselves in, too.
The Hole In Your Life Book Tour
The Hole in Your Life by Dr. Bob Rich is a heartfelt, uplifting practical guide to understanding grief and healing from it.
The Hole in Your Life: Grief and Bereavement
by Dr. Bob Rich, PhD
Genre: Nonfiction, Inspirational Self-Help
The Hole in Your Life by Dr. Bob Rich is a heartfelt, practical guide to understanding grief and healing from it. Rooted in personal experience-most notably the loss of his daughter, Natalie-and decades of psychological counseling, Dr. Rich offers readers compassionate tools for navigating bereavement.
Drawing on real-life case studies, mindfulness techniques, and the “seven magic bullets” for wellbeing, he explores the complexities of grief, from anticipatory sorrow to finding meaning and renewal.
Blending storytelling, humor, and therapeutic insight, this book serves as both a comfort and a roadmap for anyone experiencing loss, emphasizing that while grief is unique and unpredictable, growth and peace are possible.
“Thank you for asking me to read The Hole in Your Life. Its insights will help countless people struggling with loss. I recently lost my youngest sister, and it was a blessing to read your thoughts on the paths I can take toward remembering her in healthy ways.” — Georgiann Baldino, author of A Family and Nation under Fire, and other books
“Dr Bob Rich’s The Hole in Your Life is written from the heart. It shares his personal experience and many case studies with his clients, making research-based recommendations on how to process grief in a very readable and easy-to-apply manner.” — Dr David Morawetz, counselling psychologist, grief counsellor, and founder and director, Social Justice Fund
“Grief is something that touches everyone’s life at some point or another, so it only makes sense to empower ourselves with the tools to cope-and who better to learn from than Dr. Bob Rich, a psychologist with decades of experience helping patients overcome a wide variety of life’s problems, including of course, grief.” — I. C. Robledo, a bestselling author and editor in self-development.
The Hole in Your Life is a good toolbox for coping with grief and I agree with all of it. Among the points that resonated with me most deeply are these ideas: grief is part of our life experience, so let’s not be afraid of it; it is easier to recover from grief if you grieve before the person dies and suffer with them; and, that only way to learn from loss with meaning is through suffering, as long as it is not self-inflicted.” — Alfredo Zotti, author of Music Therapy: An Introduction with case studies for mental illness recovery.
Iceni: The Year Of Sacrifice Book Tour & Giveaway
The revolt of Queen Boudica and the Iceni against the might of Rome has echoed down the centuries. Nearly 2000 years ago, during the early years of Roman Britain, Boudica, a victim of Roman injustice, raised the Iceni tribe in rebellion against Rome.
Iceni: The Year of Sacrifice
Iceni Book 1
by Stephen D Owen
Genre: Historical Fiction
Iceni: The Year of Sacrifice is the first thrilling instalment in this historical trilogy.
60 AD. The death of Prasutagus, the Iceni king, leaves his kingdom divided between Rome and his daughters. The Roman Procurator Catus Decianus seizes the entire territory and brutalizes Boudica and her family.
Driven by vengeance, Boudica rallies the Iceni tribe and allies including the Trinovantes, Coritani, and Catuvellauni. As Roman forces are preoccupied in the north, Boudica’s rebel army advances on Camulodunum, the Roman provincial capital, where a vastly outnumbered Roman defence struggles to hold.
With the fate of Roman Britannia hanging in the balance, the epic tale of sacrifice, rebellion, and fierce determination unfolds.
About the Author
Stephen D Owen, an enthusiast of Roman Britain and the Iceni Revolt, wished to bring the dramatic story of Queen Boudica, a druid priest and the Iceni Revolt to life in his debut novel, Iceni: The Year of Sacrifice.
Stephen explains: “The revolt of Queen Boudica and the Iceni against the might of Rome has echoed down the centuries. Nearly 2000 years ago, during the early years of Roman Britain, Boudica, victim of Roman injustice, raised the Iceni in rebellion against Rome.
On 1st of August 1984, millennia later, a mysterious link with the drama of the Iceni Revolt may have been uncovered. The remnants of a male peat body were found at Lindow Moss Wilmslow Cheshire, England.
At first the peat body was thought to be a murder victim, yet in time the body was proven to be far older. As old as the Iron Age in Britain at the time of the Roman Conquest.
Known as Lindow Man, or Pete Marsh, archaeologists and experts were called in. A theory was put forward, Lindow Man was in fact a high-born sacrificial victim. A druid priest, perhaps close to Boudica herself, who was a witness and key to the Iceni revolt.
The discovery of Lindow Man inspired me to write Iceni: The Year of Sacrifice. Was this man a priest?
Fundamental to the fate of Boudica and the Iceni? Although my version is fictional, I decided a good challenge would be to write my version of what could have happened, but I would encourage any reader to look into the history to form their own opinions!”
Excerpt:
EXTRACT CHAPTER 1 ICENI: THE YEAR OF SACRIFICE
     The air was bitter cold and heavy with tension, threatening more snow. High in the trees that overlooked the track, ravens cried hoarsely.
     The first century of Romans, veterans of the colonia of Camulodunum to the south, halted before the circle of warriors, not twenty yards off. Their leader, the grim centurion with the heavy scar etched across his face, advanced a few paces, with the wolfskin-clad standard-bearer at his side.
     Behind them, another century halted, shields presented to the front in two ranks, their centurion advancing before the first rank. Behind them, hundreds more Romans on foot, marching in column, moved off the track and formed up in ranks. The mounted Gauls had moved around the far side of the palace. More than a dozen surrounded Boudica and the others, spears lowered.
     Even as the Roman veterans and Gauls halted in perfect formation, investing the palace buildings of the Iceni, the mounted leader rode forward from the track.
     He halted by the lead centurion and dismounted silently. A soldier moved forward from the ranks and took the reins of his horse. He stood there momentarily, gazing on the Iceni queen and the others.
     Calonus and his warriors waited silently, hands on the hilts of their swords. The man narrowed his eyes, drawing his rich cloak about him, his breath steaming on the bitterly cold air.
     Then he took a few steps forward, his boots crunching on the snow. The centurion and standard-bearer at his side. Even as he looked on them, Arminus, the priest, saw two more riders moving down the track behind the soldiers, heavily cloaked. He felt his blood run cold as he looked on them. Even though their cowls were drawn over their heads, obscuring their faces, he feared who they might be.
     The leader broke the silence. He spoke in a commanding voice, so that all could hear. “I am Catus Decianus, procurator of Britannia and representative of Nero Caesar himself in the province. He paused. “Which one of you is Bera of the Trinovantes, sometimes known as Boudica, wife to the recently deceased Prasutagus of the Iceni?”
     Boudica paused for a moment then stepped forward, leaving her daughters with Arminus and her serving women. She stood alongside Calonus and his warriors.
    “I am Boudica of the Iceni.”
     The procurator took a few more steps forward, the centurion at his side, looking her up and down. The tension in the air was palpable. Calonus gripped the hilt of his sword as hundreds of Romans stood in silence, watching the procurator and the queen of the Iceni.
     The procurator nodded slowly, as if confirming her words in his own mind. “So be it,” he continued. He raised his voice again, speaking to all of them, so that none of his words could be mistaken.
     “I am here with the authority of Nero Caesar. As a client kingdom, the Iceni are the subjects of Caesar and must answer to his will.”
     He produced a rolled-up parchment from the folds of his cloak. Slowly, he held it up before him.
     Boudica felt cold as she realised what it must be. The will of her late husband. The other copy lying amongst his possessions in the palace.
     “I received this from a so-called embassy of the Iceni. An embassy that carried the words of the Queen Boudica, wife of the late king and self-styled leader of the Iceni.”
     He turned his gaze to her then, his cold, narrow eyes searching hers.
     “You are she.”
     Boudica remained silent.
     “Know this,” he said, “so there can be no mistaking of my words. Your king was subject to the whim of Caesar. A client he may have been in his lifetime, yet now he is dead, his kingdom, his estates, his people are subject to Rome. Rome, and Caesar, are the arbiter and power in this matter. It is the will of Caesar that the Iceni, and the estates of Prasutagus, once king of the Iceni, be brought within the power of Rome.”
     There were angry murmurings amongst the followers of Boudica, yet the queen herself raised her hand for silence. Arminus placed his hands on the shoulders of her daughters. He felt a deep foreboding settle upon him. He looked up into the grey sky, searching for Her. For the all- giving one. Danu, goddess of the people. Yet he knew her presence was distant. His gaze fell on Boudica; so much rested on her shoulders.
Guest Post By Stephen D. Owen
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I probably first considered myself a writer when I was studying English language and literature. I realised I enjoyed writing and the creative process, using words to form emotion, expression and imagery.
I pursued a creative writing course and wrote for the local newspaper. I began to find the discipline of writing every day and this would eventually lead me to writing the novel that would become Iceni: The Year of Sacrifice
Where were you born/grew up at?
I was born in Bath, a beautiful and historic city in the west of England. I spent my childhood and some of my adult years living in Frome, an attractive market town near the Mendip Hills to the south of Bath.
I have spent the last two decades living in Bath and now Bristol. Bristol is a major city in the west of England with a vibrant culture and music scene.
Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
Describe myself? An idealist, yet a realist.
Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
I would like to think my debut novel, Iceni: The Year of Sacrifice, and the other two I am working on in the trilogy, have the potential to become a movie. The revolt of Queen Boudica and the Iceni tribe against the might of Rome has an enduring appeal.
The wronged, rising up against the oppressor. Boudica and the Iceni have been the inspiration for novels, plays, films and drama. Bringing my story of the revolt to the big screen would be my ultimate ambition.
What is something unique/quirky about you?
As well as being a writer and author, I am a gig photographer. I photograph some of the best bands in the business, mostly in Bristol and Bath. The Levellers, Selecter, UB40, Kaiser Chiefs, Texas.
I am well placed in Bristol with so many festivals, gigs and star attractions coming here. The Bristol Sounds and Harbour festivals are highlights of the summer.
Interview With Author B.T. Polcari
By way of introduction, here is B.T. Polari’s bio:
B.T. Polcari is a graduate of Rutgers College of Rutgers University, an award-winning mystery author, and a proud father of two wonderful children. He’s a champion of rescue pups (Mauzzy is a rescue), craves watching football and basketball, and, of course, loves reading mysteries.
Among his favorite authors are Richard Osman, D.P. Lyle, Frederick Forsyth, and Michael Connelly. He is also an unapologetic fantasy football addict. He lives with his wife in scenic Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Hello, B.T. , welcome to Angel Kiss Publications. Thank you for agreeing to do this interview.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
When did the writing bug ensnare you?
It’s tough to say. I wanted to be an author since I was ten, but I didn’t really start writing until 2013, which I discuss later in this interview. My fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. S, opened my eyes to the power of words and how they can be used to elicit a range of emotions from people reading your words. I still find it amazing during rewrites how with a few tweaks here and some word changes there, I can completely change a scene. It’s so cool.
Is writing your full-time profession?
Yes. It’s my second career, having retired early in 2013.
How long have you been writing?
I started in 2013, with my debut novel, Against My Better Judgment, being published in 2020.
Have you won any literary awards?
Yes. Hopefully Lucky Secrets does just as well.
Against My Better Judgment
2021 Eric Hoffer Awards—Honorable Mention, Mystery/Crime; Grand Prize Finalist (2500 entries); First Horizon Award Finalist
2022 Readers’ Favorite Awards—Silver Medalist
2022 American Fiction Awards—Finalist, Cozy Mystery
2022 Best Book Awards—Finalist, Humor/Comedy/Satire
2023 Mystery and Mayhem Awards—Finalist, Amateur Sleuth
Fire and Ice
2023 Eric Hoffer Awards—Finalist, Mystery/Crime
2022 American Fiction Awards—Double Finalist, Cozy Mystery, and Humor/Comedy
How many published books have you written?
Three. I also have two unpublished manuscripts.
Which genres do you write?
Young Adult Mystery, Cozy Mystery, and Mystery
What do you find most challenging writing for these genres?
The plotting process. Before I start writing, I have 80% of the chapters sketched out, meaning most of the book is laid out, including characters, scenes, and the ending.
I do this because in a mystery, all the pieces must fit together – clues, red herrings, misdirection, innocent suspects appearing guilty, etc. – and the pacing must be spot on.
The only way I can make it all work is by spending a lot of time up front envisioning everything and writing it down. It’s challenging, but it’s worth it once I start writing.
What are you working on now?
I have several projects in various stages of development. One is a YA mystery for boys after an agent expressed an interest in me giving it a shot.
I also have the next Sara book fully plotted and ready to write – I just need to decide how I want to go about it (yes, I understand, this is intentionally vague – sly wink).
I am also in the early stages of fleshing out a spinoff with Mrs. Majelski – she is a huge favorite of my readers, my editors, and myself. The enigmatic old lady is such a blast to write into my stories, so why not write a story with her as the main character??
Can you share a random interesting fact about yourself?
Until a 2022 knee injury forced me to retire from bowling, I was a high-level bowler with ten perfect 300 games, a high set of 826 (278-248-300), a season-high average of 226, and 20 appearances in the National Open Championships with a high finish in 2019 of 99th in Singles and 141st in All Events.
This was also my final Nationals. I was also the anchor bowler on a 5-man team that broke a 25-year-old Tennessee state record for high game scratch. In this game, we made 52 of a possible 60 strikes.
When I stepped up on the lane in the 10th frame, the place was going berserk with people yelling for me to “take it to the house.” It was only later that we found out about breaking the state record. Everybody originally was only focused on the city record.
How’s that for random?
What spark started one of your stories?
In 2013, my wife and daughter were talking about a possible fun story to write when we were all in Washington, D.C. for my son’s medical school graduation.
After we returned home, their conversations continued, with notes being captured in a collaborative app called Catch Notes.
It was then I knew I was going to write a story for them, which years later turned out to be my award-winning debut novel, Against My Better Judgment. I wrote a blog post about this on my website, which can be found here
What is one of your favorite scenes that you’ve written? Why?
The final chapter of Lucky Secrets. I loved it when I initially wrote it for my first book, Against My Better Judgment, but it later got cut when my editor and I decided to make the protagonist, Sara Donovan, an eighteen-year-old rather than twenty-one.
I saved it because it was so good and I knew eventually I would be using it in a future book. I had to rewrite parts of the chapter for Lucky Secrets, but it worked great as the final chapter.
The reason it’s my favorite scene is because it shows Sara in all her glory—determined, klutzy, snarky, funny, observant, vulnerable, and ultimately—successful. It’s a great chapter.
Who is your favorite character that you’ve created? Why?
By far my most favorite character is Mrs. Majelski, who has been in all three books in the series. And it’s not just me—many of my readers love Mrs. M. She is an octogenarian mystery woman with a very colorful past and a knack for showing up at just the right times in each story.
I thoroughly enjoy writing her into scenes because there is so much I can do with her character.
Consider that the little old lady effortlessly pumps iron in the gym; runs on the treadmill and through parking lots and garages; maniacally works the elliptical without breaking a sweat or loss of breath; nimbly clambers up walls in a rock-climbing room; deftly wields a blowtorch; is a part-time bouncer at Sunny Time’s Stein Room; drives a tricked-out monster truck with a full gun rack; knows how to hack security systems ranging from residential to high-end commercial ones; has shadowy links to international syndicates and intelligence agencies; and more.
Even my developmental editor said, “I still wanna be Mrs. Majelski when I grow up.” How can I not love the old lady!!
What has been your most rewarding experience since publishing your work?
Hearing from readers in comments, reviews, and face-to-face conversations on how my stories entertained them and made them laugh, sometimes out loud. Plus, it’s awesome to hold a book in my hand with my name on the cover. It never gets old.
What advice would you give to authors just starting out?
Write every day, if even for thirty minutes. And just get the first draft written – don’t worry about making it perfect. That is what editing is for.
Too many people starting out wring their hands over everything when writing their first draft and they end up getting frustrated or overwhelmed and quit.
Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good. Get that first draft written, then use the editing process to turn good into great.
Is there anything else you’d like your readers to know about you?
I’m still learning about writing and getting better every day because I keep on writing.
What message are you sharing in your books?
Never give up and believe in yourself. No matter how bad things can seem, no matter how dark the skies get, never ever give up.
What are your favorite books?
Too many to put here but all of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club books; Frederick Forsyth’s Fist of God and Day of the Jackal; Don Winslow’s City on Fire trilogy; and Benjamin Stevenson’s Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone.
If you could create an author’s group with writers from any time period, who would you invite?
Agatha Christie, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Raymond Chandler, Michael Crichton, Frederick Forsyth, Elmore Leonard, Dean Koontz, D.P. Lyle, Gillian Flynn, Dashiell Hammett, Robert Ludlum, James Patterson, and Michael Connelly.
When you’re not writing, where can we find you?
Walking in the park, cooking, or in my chair reading.
Do you have a website/Facebook page, etc?
Yes.
Where can we find your books?
Teaser photo for Some Call Me Eve
Excerpt:
As if summoned from the depths of the earth, my final challenger stepped forward. He towered over me like the great castle walls, his shadow engulfing me in darkness. I watched his sword intently as it swayed like a feather between his fingers.
He struck without warning. I was sent stumbling backward after a weak parry,underestimating the power of his swing. But speed was my greatest strength, and I recovered my balance almost instantly.
The sheer force of his assaults far overpowered my own, restricting me to the defensive. Each slash of his blade flew by my head at frightful speeds, backed by a guttural grunt. I inched my way backward as each slice brought him a step closer. Without hesitation, my instincts took over, leading me into my signature move.
Gradually lowering myself to the ground, I bent into a squatted shuffle. My competitor’s attacks persisted, unrelenting. He leaned downward to better reach my chest.
At just the right moment, when he carried his weight on the ends of his toes, I leapt over his low arcing swing, twisted through the air over his outstretched arm, and landed smoothly behind his hunched frame. Before he could regain his stance and turn to face me once more, I delivered a lethal blow to the back of his knees.
My rival released a monstrous howl as he fell forward, dropping into a kneel. The heavy pound of his knees shook the ground, a quake that silenced the entire training field. All watched in awe as their star fighter lay helpless by my feet.
I looked expectantly at my commander, my racing heart beating in my ears. It was clear by his crossed arms and knitted brow that he was disappointed in his disgraceful brigade, but from the slight twitch at the corner of his mouth, I knew he was pleased with my performance.
“Finish the job,” he said in a low voice. I turned back to face my statuesque adversary. No longer was he the invincible beast he was just minutes before.
Down on his knees, he became a shell of his former self, humbled and abashed by defeat. Through his face guard, I could just make out his pleading eyes, ashamed before his peers, begging me for mercy.
With that look, a flood of heat filled my core. A yearning. A hunger. A lustful rage. I chuckled coldly. How pathetic.
With a skillful twist of my blade, I struck the base of his neck with the flat of my sword, simulating a dramatic beheading and sending his helmet soaring through the air. It bounced through the dirt theatrically, spinning on its edge with a clatter before finding its final place of rest before the feet of the crowd, its hollo interior facing the huddle of defeated men.
A slow clap broke through the deafening silence, echoing across the training field. I lifted my gaze to see none other than King Ricard, ruler of Vitalia. He was adorned in a violet tunic lined with golden thread, a puffed silver surcoat that augmented his considerable physique, and a long, draping cloak exhibiting an intricate design of the royal crest.
His threatening stature was only deepened by his austere visage—a thick nose framing a set of demanding brown eyes; a bushy, graying beard matching the shade of his thick, protruding brows; and his lips, normallyforming a thin, sober line, now curved in a sly side smile.
The cluster of knights immediately fell to their knees, dropping their heads in a respectful bow. Even the commander knelt upon the dusty ground before his crowned ruler.
But I did not kneel. Instead, I stood boldly, facing my king with my head held high. The monarch stilled his hands. All waited expectantly for him to break the silence once more, this time with his booming voice.
“Well done, Princess Evangeline.”At his declaration, I sheathed my sword and doffed my helmet to reveal my face. I released the pin from my hair and let it flow down my back in long copper waves, shining like the silver armor it lay upon. My crimson lips wore their own smug grin, perfectly matching that of the king.
“Thank you, Father.”
Excerpt:
I spent the first two hours of every workday by myself while Finn was off with Bertie drinking his lunch, presumably trying to forget his ex-wife. On my first day way back on the fifth of August, I enthusiastically reported to work.
I was stoked, ready to assist the unrenowned yet Majelski-recommended, and sorta sober, Melvin “Finn” Finnegan, with taking down perps, crooks, and degenerates.
Instead, I spent that day and most of the last seven months digging up dirt on two-timing husbands, boyfriends, and insurance fraudsters, and tracking down the last location on the Internet for delinquent debtors and the occasional bond jumper.
Truth be told, the only time I spent out of the office was walking from my car to the dang building and then back again for the trip home to Sketchville. But working the streets on a high-profile case? Any case?
Not a chance.
A typical weekday for me consisted of business and criminology classes in the morning, then grabbing a quick lunch of fifty-cent noodles and a cola before jumping in my traumatized hatchback more the color of gray primer than its original black and flying up I-59 to one of the more questionable areas of Birmingham for a scintillating five hours as a part-time receptionist and researcher for Finn.
And if that wasn’t enough to light up my life each and every fricking day, my drive home was a daily battle-royale with crazed Birmingham commuters reminding this soon-to-be college graduate, hopefully, that I was no match for their unparalleled skill at breaking every traffic law in the book while exhibiting quite the fluency in sign language.
